Benefits of speed limiter to motorists
Speed is a major risk factor in road accident accounting for about 35% of road crashes in Nigeria (FRSC Publication).
Electronic speed limiters are engine control devices that interface with the engine control unit and speedometer of a vehicle and restrict engine functions once the vehicle reaches a certain predetermined speed. A speed limiter may restrict the airflow into the engine, the fuel supply of the engine or change the timing of the engine's ignition system to keep the vehicle from exceeding the predetermined speed limit imposed by the limiter.
Electronic speed limiters are common on many types of vehicles and are often mandatory equipment on large trucks and similar commercial vehicles in some jurisdictions. Laws requiring speed limiters for commercial vehicles are usually motivated by the concept that limiting the speed of these vehicles may improve highway safety. In the case of passenger cars, the motivation behind including electronic speed limiters is often to prevent the vehicle from exceeding certain design limitations in addition to safety concerns
Benefit of Electronic Speed Limit Device
1. Reduced risks of accidents by limiting maximum speed thereby preventing irreparable loss of lives, goods/products and vehicular equipment.
2. Allows maximum pulling power
Reduces risk and severity of accidents
3. Easy policing option
4. Reduction in the stress on the driver and complete concentration on traffic, because he doesn’t have to keep a constant watch on the speed limit.
5. Reduced operating costs through:
– Reduction in wear and tear; savings on brakes and tyres
– Lower fuel consumption and repair costs
– Longer vehicle-service life
– Elimination of road traffic fines

I am in total support of the FRSC towards this project.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great initiative. When I bought my new car I was advised that a warning would sound at the speed I predetermined. I was advised not to set it at 120km because it is apparently very annoying, so we set it at 130. I thought I would never need it. But I was shocked when my new very powerful turbo charged Audi sounded an alarm when I had no idea I had exceeded the 120km limit! Naturally I immediately checked the rear-view mirror then allowed the speed to drop to 120. This is a good deterrent for those times when someone is in a hurry or driving downhill, for example. Speeding is not always intentional. Carrying a heavy load downhill would very easily allow unintentional speeding. Once a vehicle is travelling too fast, its easy to lose control, when gravity starts plunging the heavy vehicle downhill. A speed limitor makes a LOT of sense.
ReplyDeleteI can set a speed limiter on my car but I don't. I think if you are not aware what speed you are travelling at you shouldn't be driving! If you are trying to pass for example a long lorry having your limiter set at 70mph would not be a good idea in my opinion.
